Public broadcaster TVP has announced that it has removed rock star Adam 'Nergal' Darski as a juror on a talent show after another alleged incident of insulting religious sentiment in Poland.

“Adam Darski, aka Nergal, will not be given his own programme on TVP, nor will he be a juror in a second series of “Voice of Poland”, even if the network decides to commission one [a second series],” said spokesperson for TVP, Joanna Stempien-Rogalinska.

The announcement follows a campaign led by the Bishop of Wloclawek, Wieslaw Mering, backed by some MPs from the socially conservative Law and Justice party and members of the public.

Opponents of Darski argued that it was offensive to Catholics' religious sensibilities that the rock star should be employed by the public broadcaster.

Darski, who is the frontman of internationally acclaimed death metal outfit Behemoth, had formerly been involved in a long-running court case, after he tore up a copy of the Bible during a concert in 2007.

Earlier this month, Nergal further mocked his detractors by appearing on stage at a Warsaw concert of Polish band Times New Roman, dressed a priest.

Band members were pushed on stage in wheelchairs by women dressed as nurses, following which Darski performed a mock miracle on the musicians, who subsequently rose and picked up their instruments.

The incident prompted TVP chairman Juliusz Braun to denounce the stunt as “provocative behaviour, showing a lack of respect not only for religious beliefs, but also for illnesses and the disabled.”

The last episode of “Voice of Poland” will air in the first week of December. As TVP underlined today, Darski will not be receiving further commissions from the network. (nh/pg)
