Marcin B. (full name withheld under Polish privacy law) has accepted responsibility for the crime.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon at the Warsaw Rising Museum.

The enterprise, which was launched in 2004, chronicles the doomed 1944 insurgency against the Nazi occupiers.

“The man was very drunk,” director of the museum Jan Oldakowski told the Zycie Warszawy daily.

“He said that he had drunk a litre of vodka before entering the museum.”

Although Marcin B. had apparently behaved unobtrusively before he decided to relieve himself, he initially told police that he “doesn't like this museum, and he doesn't like Lech Kaczynski,” according to Zycie Warszawy.

Late president of Poland Lech Kaczynski, co-founder of the conservative Law and Justice Party, was instrumental in creating the museum during his term as mayor of Warsaw (2002-2005).

Having sobered up, Marcin B. apologised to the staff of the museum. He is likely to receive a fine from the courts, although in some cases, a prison term is applicable for crimes involving the degrading of historical sites. (nh)
