Jerzy Artymiak can be expected take over the post of chief military prosecuting general from General Krzysztof Puralski in the near future, say media reports.

“President Komorowski has repeatedly stressed the need to solve the bad situation in the prosecution [services],” said President Komorowski’s spokesperson President Joanna Trzaska-Wieczorek.

Attorney General Andrzej Seremet and Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak are thought to concur with the new appointment.

On 9 January, deputy chief military prosecutor Mikołaj Przybył shot himself in the head during a break in a press conference on the investigation into to the Smolensk air disaster in April 2010, which killed President Lech Kaczynski and 95 others.

Mikołaj Przybył, who lived after his suicide attempt, had said he was against plans to put the military wing of the prosecution under civilian control after he demanded journalists hand over mobile phone texts to ascertain who was leaking information to media about the Smolensk investigation.

Following the row, Prime Minister Donald Tusk indicated that he thought the separation of military and civilian wings of the prosecution services was outmoded in a post-communist, modern day Poland. (pg)
