Deep freeze death toll rises to 29 in Poland

Another nine people have died from the cold in Poland, bringing the death toll to 29 over the last seven days, as temperatures are set to plummet still further tonight.

The Government Security Centre reports that three people died in the Silesia province in the south west and two in Lublin in the south east. The rest of the victims came from the Warmia and Mazury, Lubuskie and Małopolska regions. Most of the dead were homeless.
Temperatures plunged to minus 34 degrees Celsius in the Bieszczady mountains this morning.
Bozena Wysocka, a spokesperson at the Government Security Center, warns that daytime temperatures will fall to below 20 degrees in many places, with the coldest temperatures in the southern, eastern and central provinces. (pg)
