Komorowski attended a Mass in Warsaw at the Field Cathedral of the Polish Army, which was also attended by relatives of the victims of the crash.

Before Mass began, the president laid flowers beneath a plaque commemorating those that died in the disaster, which included First Ladty Maria and central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek.

Earlier this morning, at 8.41 am – the precise time of the crash two years ago - Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz took part in a ceremony at the Powazki Military cemetery.

The former chiefs-of-staff of the army, the navy and the air force had all been aboard the flight.

Wreaths and candles were laid, and the names of the victims were read out. There were no speeches.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the twin brother of the late president, led an alternative ceremony outside the Presidential Palace. The event was attended by prominent members of Law and Justice (PiS), a conservative party founded by the two Kaczynski brothers.

Memory returns

Meanwhile, daughter of the late president, Marta Kaczynska, has told reporters that the shock and sadness she felt two years ago on learning of the death of her mother and father returns each day.

"I would like to express my gratitude to all those who remember my parents and have the courage to show it,” she said after laying flowers at the tomb where Lech and Maria Kaczynski are buried in the crypt of Wawel castle in Krakow, southern Poland, the burial site of many of Poland’s statesmen.

A one-hour private Mass was led by Fr. Monsignor Zdzislaw Sochacki at Wawel Castle was attended by family members and politicians from Law and Justice (PiS) .

In Smolensk, at the site of the disaster, Culture Minister Bogdan Zdrojewski led a ceremony attended by a delegation of around 120 for those who died in the tragedy.

The minister will also be holding talks with Russian officials on the erection of a monument at the site, which will be unveiled next year.

The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) have also been holding ceremonies in remembrance of three of their MPs who died in the tragedy, Jaruga-Nowacka, Jolanta Szymanek-Deresz and Jerzy Szmajdzinski. (pg/nh)
