The man died after a ceiling collapsed in one of the shafts, 850 metres below ground.

Despite an emergency operation launched directly after the ceiling collapse, rescuers could not save the miner who has been working in mines for 26 years, said Sośnica-Makoszowy colliery spokesman Zbigniew Madej.

Sośnica-Makoszowy sits on one of the largest coal reserves in Poland with estimated reserves of 180 million tonnes.

The colliery was the scene of one of Poland’s most tragic coal mining accidents when, in 1958, 72 workers were killed during an underground fire following an explosion. (pg)
