Warsaw’s train stations are to get a much-needed facelift, starting first with the city’s western and eastern stations.
The Central Train Station’s remodel is to be completed by 2011, in time for the Euro2012 matches which Poland is co-hosting with the Ukraine, and includes an upgrade to serve international high speed trains.
According to PKP Polish National Railways, the remodels will not happen at the same time because the city would, effectively, be cut off from the world in terms of rail travel.
The capital’s Central Station, originally constructed in 1975 and designed by Arseniusz Romanowicz, will receive a 22 million zloty remodel, according to an announcement made by PKP Thursday. The renovation will include a reworking of the underground infrastructure, including platforms, tracks and corridors – food vendors will be moved to a cafeteria area.
PKP originally planned to finish the remodels on all three Warsaw stations in time for the UEFA matches in 2012, but plans have been pushed back. Tenders for the work are to be opened between 2010-2011 and construction deadlines will be set for 2014-2018. (mmj/jb)
