Poland – the land of milk and honey

20.11.2009 11:34

The dairy industry in Poland is thriving but Poles do not consume enough milk and products, which may ultimately reduce supply.

An average Pole annually consumes just 180 kg of milk, butter, cheese, yoghurt and other dairy products. In Western Europe dairy product consumption totals 340-420 kg per person and in the Scandinavia 400-500 kg.

A higher consumption of milk in Poland not only could enhance Poles’ health but also contribute to the development of the Polish dairy industry, say industry representatives.

If an average Pole consumed at least 260 kg of dairy products, it would help Polish dairy industry sustain its production.

Meanwhile, the amount of milk produced but not consumed in Poland is growing. The government has just finished a school programme, which provided students with free dairy products, because it lacks 100 million zloty (24 million euro) for the aim. The government also plans to pay dairy suppliers only two months after they deliver the produce, which will eliminate small companies. (mg)
