Government saves billions on road construction

29.07.2010 09:25

In the last 18 months, the cost of building one kilometre of highway has dropped by one third, saving the government 17 percent on original budget forecasts.

The fall in construction costs comes as an effect of the economic crisis, as well as heightened competition from construction firms from China and the Czech Republic.

Fewer costs do not mean that more roads will be built, however, but rather a decrease in the total sum set for highway construction, which is usually covered by National Highway Fund bonds.

Total highway construction contracts amount to 12.9 billion zloty (3.2 billion euro), 17 percent less than previously envisaged by highway construction budget forecasts. (jb)

Nice to see that the costs have come down - but where are the roads? This is like a never ending story.

He, he ... Civic Platform (PO) and creation of new roads, interesting, very interesting ... its almost as exciting as a dry water! And now, seriously, of course you can save somehow on building the roads, but what’s the trade off doing so, and to which POcket will land those presumably saved money? Mr. Donald tusssk any ideas or should I refer this question to your boss psychopath 'put-in'?
