The opera King Roger by famous 20th-century Polish composer Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937) has been staged at the Bregenz Festival in Austria in a production by the Festival’s Artistic Director David Pountney.
Sir Mark Elder conducted the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Polish Radio Choir from Krakow and the Camerata Silesia Singers Ensemble from Katowice. Scott Hendricks sang the title role and the Ukrainian-born Polish singer, Olga Pasichnik, sang the part of Queen Roxana. Two more performances of King Roger are scheduled for August 1 and 3.
The staging is an Austrian-Spanish joint venture. In the autumn, King Roger will be shown at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona.
Last month, Szymanowski’s opera was produced in Paris. (mk/mmj)
