A Pole was among the 36 arrested in Rome during an anti-globalization protest in anticipation of the beginning of tomorrow’s G8 meeting in L’Aquilla, Italy.
The Italian news agency ANSA announced that, besides 27 Italians arrested, there are German, Swedish, French, Swiss and Polish citizens in the group. Roman police informed the Polish Consulate of the arrest.
Alter-globalists organized the protest to draw attention to their dissatisfaction with the meeting of the world’s eight richest country’s that starts Wednesday in eastern Italy. The protesters burned tires and set rubbish bins on fire.
The protests were not peaceful as participants attacked a police van with bottles, causing police to arrest thirty six people. Besides glass bottles, protesters were found to have baseball bats and other potentially dangerous objects.
Another picket is scheduled to take place Tuesday afternoon in front of the American embassy. (mmj)
