UPDATE - Poland will complete the process of ratifying the Lisbon Treaty at the weekend, confirms a politician close to President Kaczynski.
There is some confusion, though, as to whether it will be Saturday or Sunday when President Lech Kaczynski will sign the document, which has already been through both houses of parliament in Poland and has been waiting for his signature for some while.
The information that the Polish head of state will sign the Lisbon Treaty Ratification Bill on Sunday was confirmed to the Radio Information Agency (IAR) by the head of National Security Bureau Aleksander Szczyglo.
However, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the President's brother and head of the Law and Justice parliamentary club, stated late Thursday afternoon that Szczyglo was misinformed.
"From what I know, the President will not sign the Lisbon Treaty on Sunday," stated J. Kaczynski, adding that his brother has planned to be in the Vatican on an official visit.
Earlier, however, Czech media sources claimed Saturday morning as the date for signing the document by President Kaczynski, suggesting invitations for the ceremony – to be held at the Belweder Palace in Warsaw - had already been sent to European Parliament president Jerzy Buzek, head of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and Swedish PM Frederik Reinfeldt whose government currently represents the EU presidency.
President Kaczynski has been delaying putting his signature on the document ever since the First Irish Referendum on the treaty, when it was rejected. The Polish head of state said that he would only sign the treaty once the Irish had changed their minds, which they did in the second ballot last Friday. (ss/pg)
