A crew member of the USS Ramage shot three shots towards warehouses in Gdynia, northern Poland while the destroyer was leaving port.
The incident happened at 10.40 CET, Wednesday morning. According to lieutenant-colonel Marcin Wiacek from the Military Police, nobody was injured and damage resulted from the shooting. It is not known why the shots were fired.
“The USS Ramage crew is being interrogated in relation to the case,” says Commander Tom Williamson from the US embassy in Warsaw.
Military police confiscated a handgun which was used for shooting.
The American destroyer came to Poland in order to participate in military exercise with Polish navy officers. It was to depart today but because of the ongoing investigation it will have to prolong its stay in Gdynia.
There are 250 marines serving at the USS Ramage, including five women and a man whose grandparents were Polish. (mg)
