Poland closely monitors Ukraine flu epidemic

30.10.2009 13:52

UPDATE - As 81,000 are diagnosed with flu in Ukraine and over 2,000 hospitalised, Poland’s health authorities are monitoring the outbreak carefully and ready to tale emergency measures.

The Chief Sanitary Inspectorate (GIS) is monitoring Polish-Ukrainian border crossings. “People who are travelling to Ukraine are being informed about the flu hazard and instructed how to protect themselves against it,” says Tomasz Miszczak from GIS.

Ukraine’s health minister has announced a state of emergency after thirty-three people died from an unknown flu virus in western Ukraine, near the Polish border.

Almost 1000 people, mainly from the Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv Regions, infected with the virus have been hospitalized, including almost 500 children. Hundreds of people have been referred to medical centres and clinics with flu symptoms.

Earlier, Poland’s health hinister, Ewa Kopacz, announced that Polish-Ukrainian border crossings might be closed if the flu virus turns out to be dangerous for Poles. She added that at the moment there is no need to do this.

Border traffic is getting heavier as Poles visit their relatives’ graves in Ukraine to celebrate All Saints’ Day.  (mg)

  • Tim 30.10.2009 16:11 Russian agents have infected public drinking fountains in a number of areas in the Western Ukraine to create a destabilization of the Ukraine state. The Russian government carries on with bio-chemical military research and used the opportunity of the worldwide problem of H1N1 to strike out at the area of the Ukraine most apposed to Russian imperialism.

  • Mario 30.10.2009 17:43 Ukraine is in grips of fear and panic. The country shut down all its schools and movie theaters for three weeks. People on the streets are wearing masks. The Ukrainian leaders are asking for urgent international aid.

Tim, I like your version. Your only weak point is that there are no public drinking fountains in Ukraine.

  • Al 30.10.2009 20:45 It's all very strange in Ukraine: the president elections, closed and destabilized western region, panic in the country and unknown horrible flu... Al
  • D.S. Leiber 30.10.2009 21:06 It is quite visible that Mario has not done any research on the subject of: World over population, Lab created viruses, lawsuits against Baxter Labs in Austria, seeding of populations......just to name a few. I am not sure of your qualifications, Mario, but you know the positioning of drinking fountains, surely you must have researched H1N1, all related materials. Therefore, some intellegent comments and replies would make you less an ass.

  • D.S. Leiber 30.10.2009 21:21 As the influenza in Ukraine is at present unadentified; would we be safe in saying it has mutated from human-avian-swine (H1N1) into a more lethal form? Or is it indeed an all together different viral strain?
