Defense Minister Klich to the Caucuses

25.11.2009 07:48
Defense Minister Bogdan Klich is visiting the Caucuses region today, with stops in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.

“My first visit in the region will touch the security situation because the Caucuses are important not only for Western Europe but also for Central Europe. The Caucuses can either be a source of conflict and crisis or a stable region,” says Klich.

The Polish Defense Minister will be meeting with his counterparts in Azerbaijan and Georgia, “who are rather 'Western-oriented'” and with the Armenian Foreign Minister, who Klich says “prefers to cooperate militarily with the Russian Federation.”

The Defense Ministry has coordinated with the Foreign Ministry so that Klich's visit will not conflict with Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski's calendar and the two government bodies are briefed and up-to-date. (mmj)

A tricky balance for Sikorski to find. Good luck!

“My first visit in the region will touch the security situation because the Caucuses are important not only for Western Europe but also for Central Europe. The Caucuses can either be a source of conflict and crisis or a stable region,” says Klich.

Or a pipeline region which connects the West to the oil and gas of the ex-Soviet 'stans' and which is part of the Great Game.

Something that clearly has destabilised states like Georgia where ethnic conflicts and pathological struggle for the pipeline transit fees necessarily breed instability.
