Poland 'no enthusiast of Afghan mission’

02.12.2009 11:28

Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said that though he “is not an enthusiast of the Afghan mission”, Poland “has to demonstrate solidarity in the spirit of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.”

Article 5 is the NATO resolution stating that if one member is attacked then all other member states must rally to its defence.

Prime Minister Tusk was commenting on speculation that Poland was about to increase troop numbers in the country in line with the US’s desire for NATO to beef up its mission there.

Donald Tusk’s remarks came as President Barack Obama announced an extra 30,000 US troops would be sent to Afghanistan in an Iraq-type surge to quell growing Taliban insurgency.

US to send 30,000 extra troops

PM Tusk spoke to the White House last night but refused to comment on the contents of the conversation. He did say, however, that a definite decision on increasing Polish troop numbers would be given “at the end of the year”.

Unofficially, Polskie Radio has learnt that 600 troops will be sent to Afghanistan and believes the decision has already been taken.

Piotr Krawczyk from International Affairs Institute in Warsaw also believes the matter is a already a done deal.

The expert told Polskie Radio that with a densely populated region such as that in Ghazni, south east Afghanistan, where Polish troops are based, there is currently not enough troops on the ground at present to take control of the situation.

“The sending of further of soldiers is therefore justified, but the question remains: how will this change the situation on the ground?”said Krawczyk.

With an increased troop presence in Afghanistan the number of the Polish troops would total 2,600 is more than  the number sent to Iraq at the height of the insurgency in 2003. (pg/mk/jb)

Tusk is lying when he says he is not an 'enthusiast' for Afghanistan because not all Western states are so willing to send troops.

Poland never turns down requests from the USA. Tusk knows the war is unpopular and has to make noises about fulfilling Article 5.

The robotic mantre of credibility always gets repeated as well as solidarity. Its more about ideology as well as oil & gas interests.

That's very interesting, as no NATO country has ever been attacked by Afghanistan or Iraq for that matter, therefore Article 5 is quite irrelevant. If he’s referring to 9/11 that was carried out by the Bush administration and had nothing what so ever to do with Afghanistan.

No enthusiast huh, well his actions prove him wrong.

My advice to everyone, never listen to what a politician verbally says because his words are deceitful, Their actions will tell the real story.

The only threat to Poland's security is their occupation of Afghanistan and the results of this Occupation. U.S. can tell you all about it as they have given birth to radical Islam through their decades presence in the Mid-east

9/11 prompted a global war on terror - in this case Islamic Extremists
as a NATO member, all must respond and defend against terroism. If Poland ever needed any help - wouldn't be a sign of solidarity if all NATO members showed some support.

Hairball,

You are so ignorant. In case you didn't know the Taliban which ruled Afghanistan, provided shelter to Al Queda and allowed them to operate terrorist training camps. I'm sure you heard of Al Queda, the very organization that attacked the Twin Towers. When asked to turn Osama bin Laden over they refused.

If America or any country for that matter was allowing terrorists to train in the country, and not only knew about it but protected these people, if those terrorists commit a terrorist act against another nation, America would be at least jointly responsible. I don't know if Tusk is an enthusiast or not but he should be.

Edo,

Your exactly right, if Poland would ignore article 5, then we can forget about our allies every coming if we need help. Now I am not to sure of our allies coming to our aid (call it bad experience) but the chances are higher seeing as we helped.

Too right! We cannot be sure that allies WILL come to Poland's rescue (let's hope they never need it) if troops are sent to Afghanistan; we can be pretty damed sure they WILL NOT come if Poland doesn't go there.

You're absolutely right, Maciej. And I guess we shouldn't forget either that these terrorists can target any country. And that's why we are there, although we might get a little more action from Pakistan as well.
