09.02.2010 08:07

The last group of around 60 officers from Nato’s Multinational Corps Northeast based in Szczecin are leaving for their mission in Afghanistan today.

They will join 70 troops who left for for the Afghan capital Kabul last week. Around 130 soldiers, including NCOs and other officers will stay in Afghanistan for six months.

Most of the deployment will join the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) at the tactical headquarters in Kabul, which is responsible for the running of operations in the country.

The soldiers have had mission experience, as two years ago they served in Afghanistan for a six-month tour after gaining Full Operating Capability. Training was completed at the end of 2009, culminating in exercises held in Norway at Nato’s Joint Warfare Centre.

Nato’s Multinational Corps Northeast was created in 1999 by Germany, Denmark and Poland, who also mutually fund the Corps. It is currently manned by troops from eleven countries. (jb)
