Afghanis burn Polish flag

11.03.2010 13:41

Afghans  burnt a Polish flag in January after blaming Poland’s troops for civilian deaths following a raid by Americans in the village of Kalech Jebara, Ghazni province, it has been revealed.

The Gazeta Wyborcza daily writes that a high-ranking Polish army official informed them that an American helicopter attacked two houses after shots were reportedly fired at US soldiers searching for Taliban militants. Four civilians, including two children aged 11 and 15. were killed in the shootout.

Qatari television showed a demonstration held two days after the raid, during which the Polish flag and an effigy of Afghan President Hamid Karzai were set on fire in protest, after it was believed that Poland’s forces were involved in the incident.

Concerned over rising tensions between the local population and Polish troops, commanders met with elders of the Karabagh district and the US paid compensation.

Poland is currently adding to its 2,000 troops in Afghanistan by 500. Most are stationed in the Ghazni province. (ek/pg)

It may be hard to get clean water, food, electricity... And it may be hazardous to one's health to be of the "wrong" religion, be seen with the "wrong" people or to even say the "wrong" thing in many middle eastern and war-torn countries... But one thing they never have a problem with is getting new flags to burn. I wonder if access to flags of the world is a comfort to those who have no food, water or any real freedoms to speak of?

Get out of Afghanistan. It's not worth it.

Anybody who says Poland is not inviting terrorism to it's people are blind and have not been paying attention.

A police state awaits Poland's future. This is all to secure our "freedom" and to cooperate with the hooligan gang, also known as NATO.

You're getting a little paranoid Jozek, not to mention its been 8 years and there has been no attack on Poland. I can go into detail why that is but why bother.

As for the flag who cares, these people don't protest against being used as human shields, so I have no sympathy for them. There blame is misplaced.
I know too

Greg - so knowledgeable yet so shy.

Jozek you are right. In the UK it is a lot nearer thyan in Poland and terrorism prevention is always the excuse.

UK is a lost cause so why bring it up. Its been a nanny state long before 9/11. You can thank your idiotic socialist policies. It's not about me being shy I just realized its pointless to have this discussion with people like you. Maybe you can tell me why after 8 years Poland has still not been attacked? I'll give you a hint, because in Poland it would strengthen the people's resolve to win, it would be counter productive.

Let's look at Spain the only reason they were attacked was to influence the elections Al Queda knew that the war was unpopular with the people and they were hoping that once attacked they would vote for a government to get troops out of Afghanistan and it worked. In Poland all major parties support the US, so it would be pointless.

As for the US and UK being attacked, any attack on them is seen as some victory seeing as they carry a lot of influence in the world. Poland doesn't carry that influence and instead of wasting resources on Poland they rather focus on the UK and US.

There's several other reasons but I have a feeling this goes over your head. You seem to underestimate Al Queda and the calculations they make to pick a target.

Couple other things, Poland is not seen as part of the western world that has so called exploited these people, not that I think the west exploited these countries because they would be even poorer if not for the west, but thats the perception these people have of the west. Poland has a small Muslim population and Poles are less politically correct.

Greg,
Your point is taken. Poland is not priority for AQ right now. But as u can see sentment is building.

On another note, the U.S. had been bombing the Arab world for decades before any significant attack on U.S. Soil. To rule out an attack on Poland would be arrogant.

I don't rule out anything Jozek, it's just highly unlikely. The benefits of helping the US outweigh any risks.

That's like being in a biker gang, you get the gangs protection, but your still an accomplice. Once in a while a molotov cocktail gets thrown back at you.
