The Muslim League in Poland is building a modern, three-story mosque near the centre of Warsaw.

The Centre of Islamic Culture, designed by KAPS Architekci, will be located in the close vicinity of the Blue City shopping centre, at the Zeslancow Syberyjskich roundabout just to the west of the city centre.

The three-story building will have an 18-metre high minaret. But the characteristic sound of prayer will not be heard drifting over the city.

“A muezin’s call for prayer will be heard only in a prayer room, not outside,” says Samir Ismail, head of the Muslim League in Poland. Apart from a prayer room, the centre will consist of a library with a multimedia room, art gallery, restaurant, café and shop. “We will pray there and make Poles aware that Islam is a moderate religion,” says Ismail.

The construction of the mosque will be mainly financed by a Saudi investor but the League does not want to reveal who it is or what the cost of the investment will be.

There are about 35-40,000 Muslims in Poland, among them Poles, Tatars, Arabs, Turks,  Palestinians and others. Most of them, around 11-13,000 people, live in Warsaw. There are already four mosques in Poland, one of them in Warsaw, built in 1993 and belonging to the Muslim Religion Association.

“We’ve also had plans to build a new mosque in Warsaw,” says Poland’s mufti Tomasz Miskiewicz.

The association’s planned mosque, however, with four 20-metre minarets, was to be built near the city centre but after WW II the authorities seized the land, which now the association is trying to regain.

“Our association unites 5,000 people and the League 180 people, mainly foreigners. Nevertheless, they quickly got a permit to build a mosque,” complains Miskiewicz. (mg/pg)

Poland has historically been religiously tolerant, hosting Jews and Muslims for centuries alongside Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant Christianity. But it is a Christian country by tradition. That was the historical starting point for Poland's accession to the "Western" world. Just be careful not to start pulling down crosses in public places to appease the few who may be offended by that tradition. Building a mosque in Warsaw might seem like an innocent move, but be aware of what may come next. Just a word to the wise.

Muslims are slowly taking over Europe. I do not support any form of religions because religions = hate and violence. Will see what happen.

Bigoted and racist.

Hardly bigoted and racist... just a practical analysis of recent trends in Islam on the world stage. I have no problem with Muslims. Just being mindful of history. I believe it's a justifiable concern and I hope it is unwarranted.

MacLeod, you are bigoted and racist for calling all Poles bigoted and racist.

I must agree with Janusz. I'm from Belgium myself, and it's shocking to see how Islam is gaining ground there, and also in the rest of Europe. They are claiming to use the right to freedom of religion, but basically they are imposing their wishes and demands in the countries in which they reside, finding their religious laws more important than real laws. I say, watch out.

There is a role for democracy in this. Perhaps a referendum of the people of Warsaw should take place to see if there are any objections to this. Unlike the EU's, rule determined by unelected beaurocrats, that no cross should be hung in schools within the EU.

Then again, extremist secularists who would ban all religious displays from public property are also a danger to a country's heritage and culture. It's a problem we've had here in America for some time. Those who demand tolerance sometimes fail to practice it themselves.
