Hitler’s tree to meet the axe?

21.06.2009 12:42
Local government in the town of Jasło, south-eastern Poland want to fell and burn a 67 year-old oak tree that was planted in tribute to Adolf Hitler.

A sapling oak was brought to occupied Poland by the Nazis from Hitler’s home town in Austria in 1942, to celebrate the German dictator’s birthday.

The town mayor intends to plant a new tree on the same spot and dedicate it to the victims of the Katyn massacre, when Polish officers were murdered by Stalin’s NKVD police in Soviet Russia in April 1940.

Some inhabitants of Jasło are determined to protect the oak tree, however. They are led by Kazimierz Polak, one of the witnesses of the planting ceremony. It was Polak who brought this historical episode to light during a recent meeting of the local Town Lovers’ Society. According to him, the tree was planted on 20 April, 1942,  Hitler’s 53rd birthday. • Klearchos 21.06.2009 21:31 The tree is a living organism and it does not have to do anything with Hitler's crimes... Is this mayor a serious person? Klearchos
  • Johannes 21.06.2009 21:31 Leave the tree. It is helping people breath now. Just call it the Katyn tree, if you have to call it anything. "Bad" street names are changed all the time but the streets are not destroyed also! Johannes

  • Steve P 22.06.2009 12:43 Keep the tree - it's an oak and can live for over 200 years.
Perhaps place a plaque in front of the tree with info on its origin plus that it will remain as a living testimony and in memory of those who suffered under Nazi terror. To cut it down and dedicate its replacement to those murdered by the Soviets at Katyn would only be seen as attempt to (i) wipe away the Nazi horror - Poland still has problems with this, esp. its Polish Jewish history - and (ii), to associate this politician with a populist nationalist symbol for his own benefit and not those of his citizens.

  • Tadeusz Gohling 22.06.2009 13:45 Let the tree live as a symbol of life. It has survived the horrors of Nazi occupation and communism, let it grow to an old age in a period of freedom and democracy. Tadeusz Gohling
  • CATHY WALTERS 30.06.2009 15:37 Steve P & Tadeusz Gohling are correct, please leave the oak live-it is a living testimony and it is an adult tree recycling our nitrogen to oxygen that no young tree can do the amount that this tree can do.Let it survive as a testament of the past and to the survivors. CATHY WALTERS
