Hooligans wage war on photo radars

30.07.2009 14:47

Vandals and road pirates have declared war on photo-radars in the Lesser Poland region in the south.

Police are finding photo radars that have been vandalized by stickers or paintball guns. Most recently, someone lit fire to a photo radar.

“We have sixty-six photo radars in the region and such occurrences have become a plague,” stated Krzysztof Dmura, a speed cop in the area, adding that photo radars cost around 120,000 zloty (29,000 euro) each.

“The equipment itself is extremely reliable – mostly the hooligans destroy the poles they are mounted on. Putting up a new pole costs 20,000 zloty (4,800 euro),” maintains Dmura, adding that the prices include insurance on the equipment.

Police are looking for the vandals throughout southern Poland and have already arrested one who published a video of the action on YouTube.

“We are looking through photos taken by the camera and we think we will be able to find some repeat offenders,” claims Dmura. (mmj)
