Poland to chemically castrate pedophiles

25.09.2009 11:25

MPs in the lower house of parliament have voted for Poland to become the first nation in the EU to chemical castrate pedophiles.

MPs voted almost unanimously, Friday morning, to pass an amendment to the penal code which would enable chemical castration.

The bill covers sexual crimes against those under 15 years of age and incestuous rape. The bill also covers internet grooming of a minor.

The amendment  - which has yet to pass through the upper house, the Senate - stipulates that courts will decide on whether or not to impose chemical castration six months before a criminal is released from jail.

Chemical castration is, in fact, a misnomer as the procedure is a series of medical treatments that reduce libido with the hope of deterring sex offenders from committing repeat offenses. The procedure, theoretically, leaves no long-term physical damage and the effects are reversible once treatment ceases, say doctors.

If passed into law Poland would become the first nation in the EU to pass such a law and almost the first in the world.

Several states in the United States employ chemical castration as a means of punishing sex offenders – California state law mandates the treatment for first-time sex offenders of victims under 13 years of age. (mmj/pg)

  • dunderhead 25.09.2009 16:47 But wait - this is serious. This story should be filed under "polish freaky". Polish MPs in their wisdom have voted for a law that nowhere else in Europe has thought necessary. Nowhere in the world thinks necessary.

Is there a massive problem of pedophilia in Poland? No. No worse than elsewhere. This is the worst kind of tokenism by a political class - all of them - who are trying to look good and strong about a problem that is thankfully quite rare.

Pathetic. It's the MPs who need castrating.

  • Joe 25.09.2009 16:57 BTW, I predict this law will be struck down when Poles realize that the worst pedophiles are the Catholic clergy. Joe
  • Jen 25.09.2009 17:45 I find it quite ironic that the focus of these comments is on criticizing Poland while completely ignoring the fact that California is described as also using chemical castration. Careful people, my mom always said, "when you point your finger at someone else you've got three more pointing back at yourself." Jen

Well done quoted, nothing to add.

But seriously, I'm also stunned at the callousness of such a sentence.

If the offender positively asks for chemical castration - which I have heard of in some cases, then I suppose its worth a try. It would be interesting to know if there are any positive results in similar studies and what other side effects may result.

But to use chemical castration as a blunt punitive tool is positively worrying in the extreme. What's next, chop off the hands of thieves? Take out the tongues of liars...? Where does this madness end?

I strongly believe all forms of corporal and capital punishment are wrong. Society is meant to uphold good moral values, not stoop to visicious means to control itself. Those countries and states who deem it right to sentence its citizens to these forms of punishment are no better than the criminals who commit those crimes in the first place. Compassion must ultimately be at the heart of any penal code, if society is to truly flourish.

"Chortling at Anon's comment...", with this comment you show that you actually belong to the same background that you want to criticise above, ".... and totally agree with Joe's comment above." and Joe said: "Welcome to the Middle Ages..."

  • Ja 25.09.2009 19:51 Hear hear for dunderhead! This is such a backward, idiotic plan. It's pure window dressing. Everyone here is violently against these low-lives. But legislation like this doesn't do Poland any favours at all.

And Joe: Catholic clergy shouldn't be worried if they were to be (chemically) castrated. They are not supposed to use "it" anyway ... :D.
