‘Don’t buy swine flu panic’ says Tusk

06.11.2009 13:35

Prime Minister Donald Tusk claims that Poland has bought into the global hysteria around the swine flu virus.

“Traditional forms of the flu are more harmful than this modern flu virus,” stated Tusk Friday, adding that the hysteria surrounding swine flu is compounded by international pressure to force governments to purchase large amounts of vaccines.

The Prime Minister added that the Polish government is more concerned with assuring supplies of the antiviral drug Tamiflu.

“Our reserve stock of Tamiflu, at least for this season, might not be enough, but there is enough supply of the drug to treat 2 million people,” stated Tusk. “That is a lot for Poland,” added the PM, saying that the reserve supply is crucial in the event of a flu epidemic.

Tusk, speaking to press at the lower house of parliament, added that he supports Health Minister Ewa Kopacz’s decision to delay the purchase of swine flu vaccines until thorough research has been completed.

“I am convinced that the Health Ministry has made a rational, common sense decision. It is too easy to just push a button and spend several million euro to purchase a drug for a less threatening flu while there are other, more pressing dangers,” stated Tusk, referring to the seasonal flu.

Meanwhile, Martin Harvey Allchurch, spokesperson from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), claims that he does not understand the stance taken by Poland’s Health Ministry. Allchurch says that the anti-swine flu vaccine is safe and urged that it be introduced in Poland without delay.

The National Health Institute announced Wednesday that over 10,000 people in Poland currently have seasonal influenza, about twice as many as this time in 2008. (mmj)

  • Joe 06.11.2009 13:52 Wow, now there's a politician with guts to tell the truth. The swine flu hysteria is way of proportion to the actual dangers, and there's absolutely no need to vaccinate so many people. I tip my hat to Donald Tusk. Joe
  • Emile Green 06.11.2009 19:18 The comments by Tusk in this article should raise some flags immediately. One, for a country that indulges in pharmaceuticals they are suspiciously lax on buying the vaccine, and just imagine all the money the the apteka's on every corner stand to lose. Poland's politicians and gov't officials most likely have been vaccinated, but for some reason they will not let the public make that decision for themselves. If Poland gets hit like the Ukraine, there will be serious political repercussions, oh snap, there are no political repercussions in Poland. As for the swine flu "hysteria", I think that has to do with the fact that healthy adults are dying, a demographic which generally doesn't die from the flu. Emile Green

  • Mario 07.11.2009 01:17 Yuschenko actually actually bought it! He wants to make a good use of the panic. As I predicted a week ago his people are already talking about postponing the elections. That's the only way Yuschenko stay in power for a half a year longer.

KIEV, Nov 6 (Reuters) - Ukraine could delay its presidential election until May next year from Jan. 17 if the government fails to control an outbreak of H1N1 flu, a senior official wrote on the respected news
web site Ukrainska Pravda on Friday.

In an opinion piece Ihor Popov, the deputy head of President Viktor Yushchenko's secretariat, accused Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's government of being taken unawares by a flu epidemic and said a state of emergency could be called.

  • b 07.11.2009 09:35 she's not the sharpest tool in the shed. the "oh snap" comment was a clear giveaway.
jozek is right, less than .04% of people who come in contact with swine flu actually die.

i'm surprised tusk made this comment. it, however, does not raise any flags at all. this just makes me respect tusk even more.
