'No' to internet censorship bill

23.01.2010 15:14

The Polish Informatics Society has protested against plans to introduce censorship on the internet in Poland.

According to a government-sponsored bill connected with their attempt to ban gambling on the web, the authorities would have the right to block some web pages deemed harmful by them.

Polish Informatics Society's head Marek Hołyński says the project does not make sense and the current legal regulations concerning the internet are fine: “If somebody spots a website containing criminal content, they are supposed to report it to the police,” he said.

Hołyński accused the government of not consulting their ideas with specialists in the area. “What's worse, these projects appear out of the blue, they are not proceeded by consultations with experts, organizations or society. They are usually introduced on the occasion of implementing some other projects, as an addition,” said Hołyński.

Internet users have expressed concerns that the government is taking steps leading to the limitations on the freedom of speech. The government claims this is all for the good and safety of Internet users. (jn)

Government always seems to know what is best for it's citizens. Funny how they "reason" away our freedoms everyday... and we do nothing. Stalin would be proud

I agree Jozek, what's even worse is that many people won't even see a problem with this.

If one believes in personal rights, one must logically also believe in limitations to personal liberty and to freedom of speech, because one man's liberty and freedom may very well impinge on another man's rights.
The question should not be whether to have censorship at all, but rather to what extent would censorship go to protect society and whether the censorship system would be abused.

Karmenu thats a very good point. I think we can all agree that your freedom ends where another begins. No matter if you support this law or not. The problem with this new law is that it isn''t necessary, the current regulations are working just fine and if the new law was to be enacted we would have to worry about it being abused as you mentioned.

Karmenu - although your point has logic, it does start down a slippery slope of exactly to what extent censorship should be applied. This is especially true to freedoms of information where personal rights are rarely abused (with maybe the exception of copyright laws).

Doesn't this violate the art. 54 ust 2 of the constitution?
