Illegal workers face deportation

28.01.2010 12:40

A group of almost 60 foreigners have been taken into custody for working illegally in Lubin, south-west Poland.

The State Border Guard in the region interrogated 55 Ukrainians, 2 Moldovans and a Belarusian. All had permission to be in the country, and even had work permits.

However, the blame rests with the employer, who did not register them and allowed them to work two to three weeks before the dates set by the foreigners’ visas.

The group has been given a week to leave Polish territory, and will not be allowed to return to Poland for a year. The Border Guard has submitted a request to the courts for the fining of the employer who allowed the foreigners to work illegally. (jb)

Ukrainian guest workers are routinely cheated and abused in Poland. But Chechen refugees are always welcome. So much for Slavic solidarity!

Ed, I agree that Russians are welcomed in Poland. Most Poles and Russians are smart enough not to bring up some stupid political disagreements into interpersonal relations.

Mario, Poland used to be visa-free for Eastern Slavs until it was forced by EU to introduce visa requirements. I understand that Poland is doing its best to liberalize visa requirements for Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians.

Ed, Are we really welcomed in Poland? I thought we still need a visa to go there. Such a shame, we don't wanna go there and not anymore to any visa required european country as many countries are openning their borders for us which are way more interesting and exotic. I am now in Domenican Republic with the whole family: summer sun, clean ocean and great service! Next spot Argentina!!!

And also, i've been to Poland twice, years ago, i would say the people are nice and i never had anyone disrespecting me but the road police is so corrupt, when they see russian number plates on my car they stop me and try to wizzle some money without any reason and when i get angry they say swear words in Russian, just disgusting!!!

Dmitry,

Enjoy Dominican Republic and then Argentina. I believe great spots to enjoy holidays, probably nicer than many spots both in Russia and the EU.

I understand that you are upset about the visas to come to the EU. Frankly, as a Pole, I am upset not to be able to travel freely to the US, or Russia as a matter of fact. I consider visa regimes - imposed by any country to be an outdated way of opressing normal and honest people. All what we can do is trying advocating the leaders to ease such burdens on normal people as you and me, and hope that one day it is going to be easier to travel. Choosing to go to the Dominican Republic and Argentina might be a great step to make statements (leaving your money, where you are welcome).

So, enjoy staying in the Americas, and should you ever wish to visit Poland anyway, let me know. Will be happy to treat you for a beer!
