Toy grenade causes panic at Katowice airport

18.03.2010 06:40

Almost 400 people were evacuated from Katowice International Airport in the south of Poland yesterday after security found a toy hand-grenade.

“We decided to evacuate passengers when the airport luggage scanner showed an object which resembled a hand-grenade. Besides we received an alarm call that a bomb had been planted in the terminal,” said a spokesman for the Katowice International Airport Cezary Orzech.

Border guards managed to find the owner of the luggage who turned out to be a teenage German boy. He said that the dangerously-looking object is just a toy. Necessary security measures had to be taken, however, and artificers removed the suitcase from the airport in order to unload it if necessary.

As a result of the false alarm passengers had to wait outside the terminal for two hours and some flights had delays. (mg)
