Two and a half years of success, claims Tusk

19.03.2010 14:30

UPDATE - Withdrawal of troops from Iraq, modernizing the Polish army, investing in highways and a pay increase for teachers were just some of the achievements listed by PM Donald Tusk as he summed up his two and a half years in office to MPs today.

"I must admit that I feel special satisfaction when I think of the progress we have made, despite the ongoing economic crisis,” Tusk told parliamentarians in a debate on the government’s record called by the Democratic Left Alliance.

On success on the international stage, Tusk mentioned the nomination of former PM Jerzy Buzek as President of the European Parliament and negotiations surrounding the EU's climate package.

In Tusk’s view, Poland’s position in the international arena has been strengthened.

Combating the global finance crisis is one the ruling party’s biggest achievements, he said, a view shared by Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski,

"Of course, not all the results have been positive,” Rostowski said. “Unemployment has grown. It is a tragedy for individuals who have been left jobless and cannot quickly find another post, as well as for their families. We are aware of this."

Promises, promises…

Leader of the SLD, Grzegorz Napieralski, accused the government of failing to fulfill their promises, and above all, of not dismantling much of what they see as the mess left behind by the previous, Law and Justice government.

He did, however, declare that his party is ready to cooperate with the coalition on such matters as the reform of the Pension Act and legislation on state-funded IVF treatment.

Napieralski said that the government has failed to liquidate the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau and reform the functions of the Institute of National Remembrance, both institutions he accused of acting in a political role favourable to the Law and Justice party.

Law and Justice MP Aleksandra Natalii-Świat criticized the government's handling of the economic crisis, which she said has come at the price of increased unemployment.

Aleksandra Natalii-Świat also said that the planned highway construction in Poland has yet to materialise. Dismantling the shipbuilding industry also cost the nation half a billion zloty, she said.

“The government is good at making promises - that‘s all,” she concluded. (pg)

From an international standpoint, Poland seems to be making good progress. Mr. Buzek's successful nomination was symbolic of Poland's rising influence in the EU. Poland's economic growth, though limited, was certainly noteworthy in the context of the European recessions. Though high unemployment is an issue, it is an issue in most Western countries right now, and Poland's situation is not as disheartening as in other European states. I think Poland is slowly asserting itself and doing so in a reasonably cautious and increasingly pragmatic fasion. It has made clear stands on the importance of national sovereignty (with respect to the Lisbon Treaty) while learning to work the international system in situations like the recent Union of Poles affair in Belarus (granted, that example is still a work in progress). And Poland is demonstrating its ability to make valuable contributions to NATO's efforts abroad. Poland is doing well in developing a good balance, I would say. Be a friend to all who you may but always guard your independence. And be careful with goverment debt. Poles are building a country they can be proud of.

Looking to the future, one can only hope Poland's relations to the East improve. It is certainly in Poland's and Europe's interests to have a more amicable relationship with Russia. Of course, Russia has a PR problem that goes far beyond Poland. The whole concept of the Eastern Partnership is also intriging and potentially very rewarding for Poland and its neighbors.

I'm a big fan of Tusk and I truly appreciate the great job he's done repairing poland's standing in the European and international communities after the disasterous anti-EU, anti-German, anti-Russian Kaczynski-Giertych-Lepper 2005-2007 coalition. A bit of caution and skepticsm is fine but the Kaczynskis took it to the extreme. Better to optimize Poland's position in the EU as Tusk has done rather than thumbing your nose at the federation as both Kaczynskis and the other right-wing ultra-nationalists. What idiocy! The twins ran Polish foreign policy like it was still 1938 and Poland became the laughing-stock of the EU!

what great job? The government has done very little. It's big calling card is the way it has handled the finabce crisis, which many outside Poland think has been better than running up huge debts (like in US or UK).

But apart from that they are a petty little conservative party - full stop.

I think, overall, he did a good job. However, I beleive Poland needs to develop a Salvic coalition with other Slavic countries such as Rissia, Ukraine, etc.
The Slavs need to unite not fight.

Poland must have good relation with Russia, it is very important. The past must be placed on a back burner.
If we get to this cooperation it will make Poland even stronger.Let's not look only to the West for all of our solutions.

agree with Thad, but what does Russia/East offer now?

Russia offers the same and only thing it CAN offer as it has since Putin came to power... Natural gas and other energy sources.

But I don't trust those Russians, it seems that Putin wants to take them to their former "glory"...

I like Tusk because he is a realist. What Poland needs today is a good dose of Real Politik coupled with de-ideologization. Down with mythology!

i cannot stand this folly. In my view Tusk has not done any special reform in Poland. I wiish you would see Sekielski's film about worth of word. There are lots of time consecrated for tusk's promises and many methods of cheating people. Tusk is good only in smailing n laing.
