Poland’s attorney general Andrzej Seremet met this morning with parliamentary speaker and acting president Grzegorz Schetyna to discuss policy concerning the release of results of the investigation into the April 10 air crash near Smolensk.

The announcement comes as police and the International Security Agency are finalizing work on the analysis of the recordings of the black boxes of the TU 154, which crashed near Smolensk military airport killing all 96 onboard including President Lech Kaczynski.

It is thought that the Polish analysts has managed to decipher more of the conversation onboard the plane and between the plane and Russian air traffic control than Russian experts managed.

Interior Minister Jezry Miller, who heads the investigative commission, has said that all the stenographic records will be passed on to the members of the commission, who will formulate their own hypothesis. Whether and when the records will be made public Minister Miller did not specify.

‘Public must have steady flow of information’

Meanwhile, Grzegorz Schetyna underlined that it is vital that the general public is informed of the progress in the prosecution’s work in the investigation.

‘We have to describe and present all information on the proceedings in the case. This is what the public expects and I hope the meetings of the commission will guarantee that the information is passed on. I aim for regular meetings and regular reports so that there is no ambiguity concerning the investigation, and I want the public systematically informed of the progress,” he said.

Schetyna said that should the need arise meetings will be held of the justice committee and the prosecution investigating the causes of the TU154 crash. He also pointed out that he had advised the attorney general to maintain a steady flow of information on the investigation. Next week Andrzej Seremet is to meet with the Justice Committee to present a report on the investigation progress.

Attorney General Seremet said he has urged the Russian side to complete the implementation of the motions for legal aid concerning the investigation into the Smolensk disaster.

Seremet has spoken to Yuri Czayka, the deputy prosecutor general of the Russian federation, who promised that the procedure would be speeded up. He also said he would intervene in the investigative committee dealing with the case personally.

Poland wants to receive further documentation of the investigation. The Russian side promised to provide an additional ten volumes next month, The Polish prosecution wants to receive them early in August.

Andrzej Seremet does not exclude the possibility of bringing charges concerning the organization of the flight of the presidential plane. (ab/pg)
