Euro-election survey – EU immigration policy

05.06.2009 01:15

Welcome to the next part of our unique survey of all the main political parties standing in the European parliamentary elections in Poland on June 7.

We sent a questionnaire to each of the election committees asking them, in English, what their policy positions were on religion, immigration, enlargement, the single currency and more. We hope that the answers they have given will help those living in Poland who do not speak Polish make a choice on polling day. It may even help Poles make a choice, too!

We have not edited the answers in any way.

Today we ask the parties about their stances on the EU immigration policy – for a full list of the surveys we have published so far go here.

Should the EU change its immigration policy? How?

1.    Unia Polityki Realnej (Union of Real Politics)

Slogan: We Bear Freedom to Europe

EP fraction: Independence/ Democracy Group

At first we should not to talk about the UE because the Lisboan treaty is still not valid as official document. We can talk about this as members of System of Schengen, but the target for Union of Real Politics is open boards. We believe that citizens from the outside of EU should have easier way to come to Poland, because many Poles lives in the Ukraine or  in Belarus. We may also need workers from China and EU bureaucracy blocks it.

2.    Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe (Polish People's Party)

Slogan: Europe’s success. Success for Poland

EP fraction: The European People's Party and European Democrats

In immigration policy each state should determine own needs, priorities and possibilities of absorption of immigrants from outside of the EU. Member states should negotiate with origin countries the conditions of accepting the immigrants. However, the policy of asylum should be equalized in the EU scale.

3.    Samoobrona (Self-defence)

Slogan: Solidary Samoobrona in Europe

EP fraction: none

The immigration policy is not the main problem of the EU right now. This reform can wait, what the people want now is stopping crisis.

4.    Polska Partia Pracy (Polish Labour Party)

The committee did not send the questionnaire back.

5.    Libertas (Libertas)

Slogan: Libertas means freedom

EP fraction: none

European Union should be more restricted in issue of immigration policy. We cannot bring in so many immigrants, which want to live thanks unemployment benefits.

6.    Sojusz Lewicy Demokratycznej – Unia Pracy (Democratic Left Alliance – Labour Union)

Slogan: Put People First

EP fraction: Party of European Socialists

The European society is aging and the EU will need workforce, therefore it is natural that workers could come from Eastern Europe.  In the future we should consider opening the labour market and integrate them with EU structures. The migration policy should be rational and include the right to change the place of residence, country and to apply for EU citizenship.

7.    Porozumienie dla Przyszłości - Centrolewica (Agreement for the Future - CenterLeft )

The committee did not send the questionnaire back.

8.    Prawica Rrzeczpospolitej (The Right of the Republic)

Slogan: Europe of Normal Families

EP fraction: Union for Europe of the Nations

In our opinion the EU’s immigration policy conducted up to now cannot be described as coherent. Uncontrolled immigration from Africa or Muslim countries poses a real risk of social and cultural conflicts. Especially as far as the EU labour market is concerned (this can already be seen on the French market). It is in Poland’s interest to introduce a controlled immigration of people of Polish descent living in Eastern Europe countries (like Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania, etc).

9.    Platforma Obywatelska (Civic Platform)

Slogan:  Vote Poland

EP fraction: The European People's Party and European Democrats

The EU needs to support a common EU immigration approach based on shared responsibility, solidarity and mutual trust. It should fight against illegal migration and control the legal migration through a common policy.

10.    Prawo i Sprawiedliwosc (Law and Justice)

Slogan: More for Poland

EP fraction: a new fraction together with British and Czech conservatives

The EU should secure its external borders in order to prevent illegal immigration. It should also limit the number of political asylums by changing the asylum policy. Those measures should not apply to countries like Ukraine, Georgia or the Balkan States.
