Early on in his career he was in the forefront of the avant-garde and wanted to destroy the orchestra. In the early 1980s, his music started to draw on tradition and became more accessible for the public. He has also developed a fine career as a conductor, serving as Artistic Director of Sinfonia Varsovia for many years.
