Euro Parliament condemns Belarus

10.03.2010 16:38

The European Parliament has condemned the recent imprisonment of activists of a Polish minority organization in Belarus.

Repression against the Union of Poles in Belarus and against those who oppose Aleksandr Lukashenko’s regime picked up at the beginning of February, with Belarussian militia seizing the Polish House in Ivyanyets and putting numerous activists in jail.

The European Union sent a mission of observers to the country, headed by Polish MEP Jacek Protasiewicz. Protasiewicz’s report has influenced the resolution passed in European Parliament today – the first resolution to strongly condemn the Lukashenko regime’s violations of human rights in the country.
