On Novermber 11, 1918 Poland regained independence after 123 years of foreign rule – partitioning by three powers. Independence Day was constituted in 1937 and was celebrated only twice before World War II. Under communist rule it was not a public holiday and was restored only in 1989 when Poland embraced freedom and democracy again.
