Galicia in 1836
In this new series of the Galician Almanac, prepare to discover the Poland that is never in the headlines: small villages off the beaten track, and the local people that make up the fabric of rural southern Poland. But before we embark on our journey, what is, or was, Galicia?
Presented by John Beauchamp
In this edition of the Galician Almanac, we take a look at the history of this region, its rich cultural heritage and how Galicia, even though not in existence any more, still remains in the collective memory of southern Poland. We meet Kate Craddy, director of the Galicia Jewish Museum in Krakow, as well as Jakub Nowakowski, an educator and historian from the museum.
This Almanac has a new email address: krakow@polishradio.pl. When the main page of Polish Radio changes to accommodate the show, the panoptikon@polishradio.pl address will go offline. Please update your address books accordingly!
Some information on the programme
The aim of the Galician Almanac is to take a step back from current events, and to present a themed approach to Krakow and the Galician landscape. Another change to the programme is that it will be premiered once every two weeks with repeats, and will be available as a podcast.
The Galician Almanac is a show that replaces the Krakow Panoptikon, which was on the air for just over two years in various forms, and which mainly concentrated on current affairs in Krakow and the surrounding region. Many thanks to all the listeners who tuned in, and on occasion, wrote to the Panoptikon with words of support!
