Heavyweight boxing champion Andrzej Golota went down in round 5 in the 'Fight of the Century' to cruiserweight Tomek Adamek at the much-anticipated match in Lodz, central Poland, Saturday night.
Golota, leaving his locker room one-and-a-half hours after losing in the match, apologized to fans, claiming that he boxed 'tragically.'
“Maybe boxing is no longer my thing,” claimed the 41-year-old, after a match that lasted almost 15 minutes. The boxer allegedly has problems with his left hand and elbow that require surgery.
Adamek, the clear winner in round five of the match, claimed after the match that he is excited and hopes to take on the famed Klitschko brothers, Ukrainian heavyweight champions.
“This victory has not changed me, I am still a country boy that likes to fight,” stated Adamek after winning his first heavyweight match and earning the International Boxing Federation's Intercontinental belt.
“In a year I could fight the Klitscho brothers at the world championships. I'm not afraid of anyone. I was offered a chance a few weeks ago. But, that was three weeks before this match and I won't enter a ring when I am unprepared, just to earn a bit of cash,” stated Adamek, born in 1976.
The match, dubbed Poland 'Fight of the Century' was the finale to a seven-match televised boxing night held in the central Polish city of Lodz Saturday night. (mmj)
