Polish volleyball debuts in Japan

18.11.2009 07:55
Wednesday, at dawn (CET) the Volleyball World Grand Championship will begin in Japan, with the Polish team debuting.

This is the first time Poland will take part in the Championship, thanks to the fact that the men's national team won the European Championship this year. In Japan, Poland will first face the home team.

The cup is played every four years in Japan, always a year after the Olympics. Apart from the host, champions of four continents and one team with the so-called wildcard takes part in the Championship. This year’s tournament is the Polish team’s big debut.

After Japan, Poland will play against Cuba, Brazil, Iran, and Egypt. So far, the Championship’s winners include Italy (1993), Brazil (1997 and 2005) and Cuba (2001). (pb/mmj)
