Former football chief held on fraud charges

19.11.2009 13:16

A Wroclaw court has charge former head of the Polish Football Association (PZPN), Michal L., with mismanagement of funds – crimes that carry a maximum sentence of eight years in prison.

“As head of PZPN, he decided to pay the marketing firm JAG Sport Marketing 7 million zloty in funds belonging to Widzew Lodz, despite the fact that Widzew’s funds were tied up in enforcement proceedings. As such, repayment plans to Widzew’s creditors fell through,” stated Jerzy Kasiura, spokesperson for the Wroclaw Prosecutor’s office.

The former PZPN head is currently giving his testimony in courts in Wroclaw, southwestern Poland, regarding a situation that occurred in the year 2000 when Michal L. is accused of having funneled 7 million zloty (about 1.7 million euro) of PZPN funds earmarked for the Widzew Lodz team.

Michal L. was head of PZPN between 1999-2008 when he was replaced based on accusations of failing to rid Polish football of corruption. (mmj)
