It took until the 79th minute for Portugal to break down the Czech defence, when, almost inevitably, it was Cristiano Ronaldo who headed home the winner, from 10 metres.

Ronaldo is fast emerging as the player of the tournament and now has three goals to his name at Euro 2012.

The Czechs, who beat Poland to qualify for the last eight, substituted Vladimir Darida for Jan Razek in an attempt to level the score but to no avail.

Portugal's coach Paulo Bento said of another dominant performance by his captain, Ronaldo: “In a dynamic game he played accordingly”.

Portugal now await the winners of the third quarter final on Saturday between France and Spain.

Tonight Germany take on Greece in Gdansk. England will play Italy on Sunday. (pg)
