Athletics: Runners add three golds for Poland in Berlin

Polish runners added three gold medals for their country on the next-to-last day of competition at the European Athletics Championships in Berlin, putting Poland back on top of the overall nation standings.

Poland’s Justyna Święty-Ersetic won the women’s 400 metres at the championships in the German capital on Saturday, posting a European lead of 50.41.

Minutes later, her countryman Adam Kszczot became the European champion in the men’s 800 metres, finishing with a season’s best of 1:44.59.

In the final event of the day, the Polish women’s 4x400 metres relay team of Małgorzata Hołub-Kowalik, Iga Baumgart-Witan, Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz and Święty-Ersetic claimed the sixth gold medal for their country, after finishing in 3:26.59, ahead of second-placed France and third-placed Britain.

With a total of nine medals, six gold and three silver, Poland led the overall medals table after day six of competition in Berlin, public broadcaster TVP Sport reported.

On Friday, Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski took the silver in the men’s 1,500 metres.

On Wednesday, Poland’s Paulina Guba took the gold in the women's shot put at the championships.

On Tuesday, Poland’s Michał Haratyk won the gold in the men's shot put while his countryman Konrad Bukowiecki took the silver.

Earlier that day, Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki won the gold and Paweł Fajdek took the silver in the men’s hammer throw.

Poland finished top of the league in terms of medals at the European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam in 2016, with six golds, five silvers and one bronze.
