General Wojciech Jaruzelski, the former communist leader who imposed Martial Law in Poland at the beginning of the 1980s, is currently receiving medical care after having contracted pleurisy.

The news was announced by the general’s wife, Halina Barbara Jaruzelska, who told the Polish Press Agency that her husband was at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw.

“On Friday, doctors from the hospital at Szaserow in Warsaw diagnosed him with pleurisy. He’s fed intravenously and has a very high body temperature – up to 40 degrees Celsius,” reported the general’s wife.

Doctors say that Jaruzelski is in a serious state, but should manage to recover. “There’s liquid in his lungs. He is conscious but a bit bemused,” added the wife.

Last week, Jaruzelski revealed that the poor state of his health was one of the reasons why he was resigning from potential offers to take part in the beatification of Pope John Paul II in Rome on 1 May.

It is the second time that the general has been taken to hospital over the last four months. In December, the 87-year-old was treated for pneumonia and heart problems in the Olsztyn hospital of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration. (mg/nh/jb)
