Work on Poland’s second metro line stopped, Tuesday, at the Insurgents’ Square (Placu Powstańców) station site after a two tonne WW II-era unexploded bomb was unearthed.

Traffic in the area has been diverted and 300 people in buildings in the area, which include Poland’s National Bank, have been evacuated.

“This morning, the manager of the construction team informed the police and a bomb disposal unit is at the site,” said spokesman for Warsaw Metro, Mateusz Witczyński.

The two tonne unexploded bomb is the largest ever unearthed since WW II in Warsaw.

In mid-August, workers working on a sewerage system came across a 300-kilogramme bomb under Marszałkowska street. (pg)
